Grades 4–6 Social and Emotional Learning

To create a presentation on the benefits of incorporating social and emotional learning into your everyday classroom environment and activities, and to evaluate your presentation.

You recently attended a conference that convinced you that a social and emotional learning (SEL) program could bring a lot of benefits for your fifth-grade class. You’re interested in piloting an SEL program in your classroom, but your supervisor isn’t quite as sold on SEL programs, believing that teaching should focus solely on academics. He’s asked you to put together a PowerPoint presentation to make your case to him and school administrators.

1. Create a PowerPoint presentation to convince your supervisor of the benefits of incorporating social and emotional learning (SEL) in your classroom. As part of your presentation describe at least four ways you can incorporate SEL into your classroom. Two should focus on environmental methods and two should focus on instructional methods. Also, make sure to include the benefits, both short- and long-term, that you see coming because of implementing an SEL program.

2. For each part of your presentation:

     a. Explain how that part addresses the issues in the scenario.

     b. Give evidence from the chapter supporting it (with citations).

3. Describe and justify how your presentation would improve teaching and learning in the scenario.
