BUS 400 Business in Society: Leadership, Ethics, and Social

This course is designed for students to develop analytical and decision-making skills in determining corporate social responsibility and ethical behavior in complex business relationships, with competing stakeholder interests. One case study will be assigned (and will be distributed in class and posted in Canvas). Students should format their case study submission according to the following outline:  Executive Summary (1 page) o Outline the purpose of the case study. o Provide an overview of the company. o Outline the issues and findings of the case study without the specific details: o Identify the relevant concepts from our course material that relate to the case.

 Findings (2-3 pages) o Identify the problems/issues/opportunities in the case. Each analysis of a problem should be supported by facts given in the case together with the relevant course concepts. In other words, explain why each problem/issue/opportunity exists by applying the corporate social responsibility framework and stakeholder orientation. o It is also important to search for the underlying problems. For example, cross-cultural conflict may be only a symptom of the underlying problem of inadequate policies and practices within the company. o This section is often divided into sub-sections, one for each issue/problem/opportunity.  Discussion (2-3 pages) o Summarize the major problems/issues/opportunities. o Identify alternative solutions to the problems/issues/opportunities (there is likely to be more than one solution per problem). One of the alternatives can be the action that the company actually took in response to the problem/issue/opportunity, but be sure to Page 7 of 17 offer original insights based on knowledge and application of the corporate social responsibility framework and stakeholder orientation. o Briefly outline each alternative solution and then evaluate it in terms of its advantages and disadvantages. If one of the alternatives if the action the company took, evaluate it in terms of pros and cons to doing so.  Conclusion (.5-1 page) o Sum up the main points from the findings and discussion.

 Recommendations (1 page) o Choose which of the alternative solutions should be adopted. Through your analysis, you may decide that one of your original insights would have been a more effective option than what the company actually did. o Briefly justify your choice explaining how it will solve the major issues/problems or capitalize on the opportunity presented. If you decide that what the company actually did is the most effective, do not simply state that you agree and that “they did everything they should have done.” Again, explain and justify the decision based on your knowledge and application of course concepts. o Recommendations should be presented in a persuasive manner, integrating course concepts to strengthen the reasoning for your recommendation.  Implementation (1 page) o Explain what should be done, by whom and by when. o If appropriate, include a rough estimate of costs (both financial and time). o Consider SMART goals – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.  References o Facts from the case and information about the company from online research need to be properly cited using MLA format. o Primary sources for course concepts are the textbook and class lectures. Be sure to cite these as well.  Appendices (if any) o For example, the company’s income statement or excerpt from the company’s CSR report.
