Written Assignment 4: Case Study

Purpose and Overview

The purpose of this assignment is for students to address complex healthcare issues through a position paper. The purpose of a position paper is to generate support for an issue. A position paper describes a particular position on an issue and the rationale for that position. A position paper is based on facts that provide a solid foundation for the stance. Directions With the “Purpose and Overview” in mind, write a position paper that addresses whether or not patients and families have a right to insist on receiving medical treatment that medical authorities agree is futile.

Your paper should include the following:

An introduction Identification of the issue (summarize the issue) A general statement of your position A body Background information, including stakeholders and the government’s role Support this information with evidence or facts Include any past experience of your own related to the issue A discussion of both sides of the issue (negative and positive outcomes and economic implications) An exploration of the societal issues involved in refusing care, both pro and con, with supporting evidence. A conclusion Suggested courses of action and possible solution(s) Restatement of your position Provide evidence from a minimum of four references to support your position; two of these should be from scholarly sources such as journals or publications from national organizations. Document all sources in APA format
