Searching for a new job is a task that requires of some questions to be asked to verify if what we are doing is the correct thing. The first questions I usually elaborate is:

Is it possible for this job to give me the possibility to continue growing as a professional and at the same time the capacity to continue learning? Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

Second question is bout the hiring company, what is the reputation of the company that is hiring me or the I want to be part of. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

Third question, what are the pros and cons of leaving my current job to achieve this new job? Is the action worth it? Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

2- Common resume mistakes:

Lack of knowledge at the time of entering the right information.

Excess of information, resumes are to be precise and short, not too long.

Wrong editing format, resume must have a professional format to follow, essays or other formats are incorrect archive type when creating a resume. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

3- prospective employer before the job interview.

This is a very important key to follow. It’s very important that we know the type of employee that the company is looking for. In case of the nursing field, according with the unit floor, what kind of nurse they prefer, abilities and skills employer value the most, flexibility, type of shift they are needing the most. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

4- red flags you should watch for in an interview.

Empathy of the person, in this case from the nurse being interviewed. As nurses we work with sick people and empathy is something very important to show at all times with patients to facilitate rapport and excellent care. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

Clean and professional appearance. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

Level of interest and ability to answer questions clearly and professionally.

In a nursing interview is also important to assess the future employee for the level of common sense and critical thinking. A good example would be a case scenario of a disappointed patient and how the nurse would help the patient to find a solution to his/her concern. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

5- prepare for the changes during the first year of employment.

The first year of employment is very hard to either experienced nurses or novates nurses in a new company. A great tool that will help us be more familiar during the first year will be, looking for tips that allow us to adjust to the new job characteristics, in case of starting as night shift nurse, tips that help us sleeping during the day to be 100% active at night, and studying the most we can and taking all courses available that help us improve our skills as nurses. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

6- enhance your strengths and improve in areas of weakness.

Strengths and weaknesses are improved by the ability of first recognizing them and second, working on them to improve what is necessary. Strengths are considered those abilities that make us better persons and nurses, those qualities that show the best of us and make our environment worth it, weaknesses are areas that need to be worked every day. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

7- Draw a career path for yourself, beginning with the present year and extending to the age of retirement.

I am actually a Telemetry nurse, on my first year of experience, I love my job and the human body as a whole, however I see myself in a more specialized area under the cardiology branch, I am getting closer to my second year of experience, growing and learning the most I can about the heart and the open heart patients while they are more stable. Furthermore, in a close future I see myself in a telemetry ICU area, taking care of those fresh cardiac patients and open heart patients, I visualize myself as a more specialized health care provider in the next 6 years, achieving my ARNP degree and later on becoming a DNP to continue providing the best care I can under the cardiology spectrum. Each year of life is a new chapter where we have the opportunity to grow and learn to become better human beings, I would love that when I achieve my retirement age I can say I followed my heart, achieved my goals and did it my way. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

8- current job prospects in nursing.

Nursing job prospects will vary from state to state and this depends of the policy’s, qualities and requirements for the nurses on each state of the country. Supplies, demand, nurse’s percentage of graduation per year, type of patients, comorbidities related with the population living on that area and population number are factors that will modify nursing prospects. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).

9- list of questions for a potential employer.

Being the candidate that fits the wanted job will require of precision and interest on the job at the time of the interview, therefore, it’s always a great tool to have a list of questions to ask a potential employer, example of these questions are:

What is your role model nurse?

What do you value the most of an employee?

What are the expected outcomes you expect a new nurse to achieve in one year of experience?

Those questions will transmit the interest in the available position and will also give the respondent a better idea of what the Director is looking for from the employees. Weiss, S. A., & Tappen, R. M. (2015).
