CREATE and Submit on D2L:

Imagine you serve on a “behavior committee” at your place of work that serves young children.  The school would like to start a new system for children to earn coupons that they can earn from teachers and save up to earn rewards.  You have a meeting tomorrow where each committee member will share their thoughts and ideas.  Create a response that gives the perspective on why this idea does not help motivate students and what you would suggest for a focus of this committee team instead.

You can write out your response, create a PowerPoint presentation (with extra notes with exactly what you will say), or make an audio or video recording of what you will say to the committee. Make sure it is an organized presentation of the information.

Elaborate on these 4 areas for your committee, in this order, and use these headings:

1. How and why this coupon method has been shown to not motivate students.

Provide at least 3 clear ways/reasons from the course material

Describe each

3. Alternative suggestion.

End with a summary and what is your hope for the committee’s work moving forward

Introduction:

As a member of the behavior committee at our school, I understand the importance of finding effective ways to motivate our young students. One idea that has been proposed is to implement a coupon system where students can earn coupons from teachers and use them to earn rewards. However, I believe that this method may not effectively motivate students in the long run. Instead, I would like to suggest a different focus for our committee team that aligns with the course content and has been shown to be more effective in motivating students.

1. How and why this coupon method has been shown to not motivate students:

a. Overjustification effect: The coupon method may lead to the overjustification effect, where students become more motivated by the external rewards (coupons) rather than their intrinsic motivation. This can reduce their intrinsic motivation and create a reliance on external rewards to perform tasks.

b. Limited impact on long-term motivation: Studies have shown that tangible rewards, such as coupons, have limited impact on long-term motivation. While students may initially be motivated to earn coupons, their motivation may decrease once the rewards are no longer available. This short-term motivation does not foster a long-lasting love for learning.

c. Fostering extrinsic motivation instead of intrinsic motivation: The coupon method primarily focuses on external rewards, which fosters extrinsic motivation. However, intrinsic motivation, which comes from within, has been shown to be a more sustainable and effective form of motivation in the long run. By relying solely on coupons, we may not be nurturing students’ intrinsic motivation.

2. Resource:

I suggest that our committee looks into the book “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” by Daniel Pink. This resource delves into the science behind motivation and provides valuable insights for educators. It emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation and offers practical strategies for fostering motivation in students.

3. Alternative suggestion:

Instead of focusing solely on the coupon method, I propose that our committee explores ways to nurture intrinsic motivation in our students. One idea in line with the course content is to create a positive and engaging learning environment. This can be achieved through incorporating student choice, autonomy, and meaningful activities into our curriculum. By allowing students to have a sense of control and purpose in their learning, we can cultivate their intrinsic motivation.

3. Summary and Hope:

In conclusion, the coupon method may not be the most effective way to motivate our students in the long run. Instead, I encourage our committee to shift our focus towards nurturing intrinsic motivation. By utilizing resources such as “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” and implementing strategies that promote student choice and autonomy, we can create an environment that fosters genuine and lasting motivation. My hope for our committee’s work moving forward is to prioritize the development of intrinsic motivation in our students, empowering them to become lifelong learners.

Resource: “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” by Daniel Pink

This resource explores the science behind motivation and challenges traditional approaches to motivation. Some of the main points covered in the book include:

– The importance of intrinsic motivation: Pink argues that intrinsic motivation, which stems from a sense of autonomy, mastery, and purpose, is a key driver of high performance and satisfaction.
– The limitations of external rewards: The book highlights the overjustification effect and explains how excessive reliance on external rewards can undermine intrinsic motivation.
– Strategies for fostering motivation: Pink offers practical strategies, such as providing autonomy, promoting mastery, and connecting tasks to a larger purpose, to enhance intrinsic motivation.

The resource emphasizes the use of intrinsic motivation in improving motivation and performance. It suggests that focusing on internal drivers, such as autonomy and purpose, can lead to more sustainable and meaningful motivation for students.

I would highly recommend this resource to schools. It provides valuable insights and practical strategies for fostering motivation in students. By aligning with the concepts discussed in this book, schools can create an environment that promotes intrinsic motivation and empowers students to take ownership of their learning.

This resource is related to what we are learning in this class module as it aligns with the course content on motivation. It reinforces the importance of intrinsic motivation and provides evidence-based strategies for fostering motivation in students. By incorporating the principles from this resource into our teaching practices, we can enhance student engagement and long-term motivation.
