Research Assignment
Answer the following questions using your final paper topic as the subject. You can use short answers, but they must be complete. Fill the assignment sheet using the headings below. List all the sources you use in a MLA style Works Cited page. See source guidelines below.
You will use a variety of resources to complete this assignment. you can try The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com ), ArtNet (http://www.artnet.com ), ArtNews (http://www.artnews.com ), Smart History (https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/art-history-basics/beginners-art-history/a/cave-painting-contemporary-art-and-everything-in-between) and The Art Newspaper (http://www.theartnewspaper.com ). You are not limited to these sources.
With all sources, you must ensure reliability. Watch the Evaluating Sources video https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=EyMT08mD7Ds and remember with all sources to ask who wrote this, and why?
Appearance
1.
Indicate the name of the artist, title, size and date of the artwork for your final paper.
2.
Discover the medium of the work and how it was made. Research and describe the process, materials and techniques.
3.
Find out if the artwork belongs to a particular period or style in art history. What is it?
Context
4.
Search for details that relate to your artwork. Find at least two historical events that date from the same time period and culture as your artwork. The Heilbrunn Timeline at http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/ may be helpful in finding these examples.
5.
List two other artworks by the same artist. If the artist is unknown, then find two other artworks that fit the same style, period, and medium as your chosen work. What similarities do you not among the artworks?
6.
Who was this artist? Discover what biographical details you can about the artist. If the artist is unknown, then you will need to find out details about what life would have been for an artist in that time period.

What is the subject matter? Research the things in your painting, location, objects, people or potential symbols and iconography. If your painting is abstract, then look for any theory or philosophy that the artist might use to compose the work.
Citation
8.
Write a works cited page for your sources. Do not use wikis (wikipedia), blogs, tourism/travel sites, or sources that do not have a listed author, editor or publisher. You must use the MLA format listed under “Citing Sources” on the ECC website for the articles (MLA Purdue OWL Citation guide).
Avoiding Plagiarism: Use the guide through the library (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/02/), and in the introduction to the course, to help you avoid plagiarism in your paper. Plagiarism will result in failure.
