Introduction:

Healthcare ethics is a critical aspect of medical education as it governs the moral principles and values that guide the medical profession. As a medical professor, it is my responsibility to design and conduct lectures, evaluate student performance and provide feedback through examinations and assignments. In this final project, I have chosen three areas of healthcare ethics that interest me. The areas I have selected are topical and current events that have significant ethical and legal implications for the medical profession. In this paper, I will summarize each of the three areas, why I have chosen to explore them, and ask one ethical and one legal question that might be present within the realm of each topic.

Area 1: Medical Ethics and Assisted Suicide

Medical ethics and assisted suicide have become a controversial topic in the medical profession. Assisted suicide or euthanasia refers to a medical procedure in which a physician assists a terminally ill patient in ending their life to end their suffering. One of the reasons why I chose this area is that it raises ethical, legal, and moral questions about the role of medical professionals in assisting patients to end their life. Additionally, it seeks to determine the medical professional’s responsibility in ensuring the lives of the patients, even those who are terminally ill.

Ethical Question: Is it ethical for medical professionals to assist terminally ill patients in ending their lives?

Legal Question: Does the law permit medical professionals to assist terminally ill patients in ending their lives?

Area 2: Healthcare Ethics and Abortion

The topic of abortion and the ethical and moral issues surrounding it is another area of interest. Abortion refers to the procedure of terminating a pregnancy before the fetus’s viability. Abortion is a critical topic in healthcare ethics due to its moral implications, even for medical professionals who have to make difficult choices regarding the mother and the unborn child’s health.

Ethical Question: Is it ethical for medical professionals to perform an abortion?

Legal Question: What are the legal implications regarding medical professionals who perform aborted procedures?

Area 3: Healthcare Ethics and Medical Testing

Medical testing often involves experimenting with human subjects, which can have ethical implications. Medical testing is a crucial aspect of medical research, and medical professionals need to follow strict ethical guidelines when carrying out medical testing. I chose this as one of my areas of interest since medical professionals must balance the need for medical research with the ethical and moral implications of experimenting human subjects.

Ethical Question: Is it possible to conduct medical testing without violating the human rights of the subject?

Legal Question: What are the legal implications when medical testing goes wrong and results in harm to the human subject?

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the three areas of healthcare ethics that interest me the most are medical ethics and assisted suicide, healthcare ethics and abortion, and healthcare ethics and medical testing. These areas raise crucial ethical, legal, and moral questions within the medical profession. Medical professionals need to weigh the medical facts of each case and the ethical and moral implications to make informed decisions regarding the health and well-being of their patients. Understanding these ethical and moral issues is critical for medical professionals who want to practice their profession with integrity and professionalism.
