Health information exchanges were conceptualized as an information highway or a circulatory system for exchange of healthcare data. There has been a significant growth of health information exchanges since the Nationwide Health Information Network in the United States has been implemented. Common uses of health information exchanges are for public health initiatives, quality reporting, and shared information on high-risk populations. Health information exchanges ensure that each piece of health care information can be shared easily and is readily available for all. Health information exchanges are important in providing secure interchangeable health care information between doctors, hospitals, and patients. With the implementation of health information exchanges health care providers have been able to save time, provide appropriate care, and save lives by ensuring the most up-to-date patient health care information is readily available for all health care providers to utilize in the treatment and care or patients.
