Identifying the nature and frequency of the problem behaviour(s)

In order to complete this assignment you need to: –

Select a child/adolescent/adult in your learning environment who exhibits challenging or diverse behaviour. – You are to write a report which details the information and data you have gathered in identifying the nature and frequency of the problem behaviour(s) demonstrated by the child/adolescent/adult you have chosen for your case study. PART A: Relevant Background Information and Justification for Collection (approximately 500 words) Information relevant to the observations of the problem behaviour could include: 1. Date of birth, current school year level or other setting/ placement, identified disability 2. Family background, siblings, country of origin and impact of culture if relevant; home environment (e.g. does the child live at home, in a foster or community care placement etc.). Care should be taken to only include educationally relevant information which contributes to an assessment for intervention. Private family details are not necessarily relevant. 3. Developmental history with reference to relevant medical, education, psychological and other information; the details collected are to be specifically relevant to the problem identified, or included to contribute to the overall analysis. Discussion with the parents could be useful here. 4. Brief educational history with reference to reports, records and files where these have been made available, and/or interview data; records of suspension or exclusion from settings, achievement and other details will provide a valuable backdrop for analysis of the student’s progress. Discussion with teachers and other school personnel could assist here. Provide a clear justification for why such information you have chosen to collect is pertinent to the case study focusing on developing positive behaviour. In cases where limited access is available to background information, you should state this clearly and discuss what information you would have liked to have collected. PART B: Baseline Data – Record of Observations of Behaviour and Contextual Factors (approximately 1,000 words) Data should be collected in a systematic fashion which considers the individual behaviour and the contextual factors following the guidelines and examples presented in seminar sessions, in reference materials, online etc. 1. Identify the problem behaviour(s). This could be done through observation and/or talking with the family and/or individual him/herself. Determine why it is seen as a problem and by whom. 2. Formal observations of selected problem behaviours should then be recorded as baseline data using a recording form devised for the specific circumstances of the case study. The form should include the critical components discussed in seminars, reference materials and online. It should provide observation-based information to facilitate the construction of a behaviour plan. Include this template in your appendix. Ensure you have sufficient data to allow meaningful analysis. This will depend on the nature and frequency of the behaviour. Data recorded should contribute evidence which will be useful in the design of a positive behaviour support plan. 3.A clear record of session times and locations when data were collected should be evident. The data should be collected over a reasonable period of time, e.g. a three-week period. 4.Graphs and descriptive statistics should be used to present the results of baseline data observations. Include the raw data in your appendix. PART C: Analysis of Behaviour Observed and the Contextual Factors (approximately 1,000 words) Discuss and critique the problem observed based on the data you have collected. Your analysis should conclude with a summary of the situation and the general implications for intervention. Particular attention should be given to the role of the environment / context in supporting positive behaviour for the individual. You should refer to recent relevant literature related to theories of behaviour management and functional behaviour assessment. A minimum of 10 recent (no more than 10 years old), scholarly sources should be cited throughout your report to support your claims.
