Most nurses would undoubtedly agree that speaking in front of an audience is a daunting prospect, however, public speaking is central to the dissemination of new knowledge (Sawatzky, 2011). This writer can identify a personal weakness when it comes to public speaking. Public speaking is incredibly important in the field of nursing, especially so when undertaking a position that requires leadership or the dissemination of information. Although presentations can be a daunting concept, the familiar steps of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation provide a simple framework for developing and executing an effective and relatively stress-free presentation (Sawatzky, 2011). In order to overcome this weakness, there must be a commitment made to practicing the audible portion of the presentation multiple times before the day of presentation. Having made proper preparations of what to say and potential questions that may arise will help to prepare and relax those who are expected to present. One strength that I will bring to the presentation will come in the form of preparedness on the topic. With thorough research, I can speak to my topic in an informed and knowledgeable manner.
