CREATE and Submit on D2L:

Imagine you serve on a “behavior committee” at your place of work that serves young children.  The school would like to start a new system for children to earn coupons that they can earn from teachers and save up to earn rewards.  You have a meeting tomorrow where each committee member will share their thoughts and ideas.  Create a response that gives the perspective on why this idea does not help motivate students and what you would suggest for a focus of this committee team instead.

You can write out your response, create a PowerPoint presentation (with extra notes with exactly what you will say), or make an audio or video recording of what you will say to the committee. Make sure it is an organized presentation of the information.

Elaborate on these 4 areas for your committee, in this order, and use these headings:

1. How and why this coupon method has been shown to not motivate students.

Provide at least 3 clear ways/reasons from the course material

Introduction:
As a member of the behavior committee at our place of work, it is crucial for us to consider effective methods of motivating students. One idea that has been proposed is the implementation of a coupon system, where students can earn coupons from teachers and save them to earn rewards. However, it is important to understand that this coupon method may not be the most effective in motivating students. In this response, I will explain why the coupon method has been shown to not motivate students and offer an alternative focus for the committee team.

1. How and why this coupon method has been shown to not motivate students:
a. Overjustification Effect: The coupon method may lead to the overjustification effect. When external rewards are introduced, such as coupons, for behaviors that were previously intrinsically motivated, students may begin to perceive the behavior as being driven solely by the external reward, diminishing their intrinsic motivation.

b. Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Motivation: Research has shown that intrinsic motivation is a more powerful motivator than extrinsic motivation. By relying solely on external rewards like coupons, we may be missing the opportunity to foster intrinsic motivation among students, which has been found to lead to greater long-term engagement and achievement.

c. Focus on Short-Term Goals: The coupon method may emphasize short-term goals and rewards, rather than instilling a sense of long-term intrinsic motivation. This approach may limit the development of skills such as self-regulation and perseverance, which are essential for lifelong learning.

2. Resource:
I recommend the book “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” by Daniel Pink as a valuable resource for the committee. This book explores the science behind motivation and provides insights on how to foster an environment that promotes intrinsic motivation.

3. Alternative suggestion:
Instead of relying solely on external rewards like coupons, the committee should focus on creating an environment that nurtures intrinsic motivation. One idea in line with the course content is implementing autonomy-supportive practices. This involves giving students choices, allowing them to have input in their learning process, and fostering a sense of ownership over their education.

3. Summary and Hope:
In summary, the coupon method may not be the most effective way to motivate students due to the overjustification effect, the importance of intrinsic motivation, and the focus on short-term goals. Instead, the committee should consider alternative approaches such as autonomy-supportive practices to foster intrinsic motivation among students. By doing so, we can create an environment that promotes long-term engagement, learning, and personal growth. My hope for the committee’s work moving forward is that we prioritize intrinsic motivation and explore various strategies to promote it, ultimately benefiting the students in our care.

Part Two Affirmations:

Resource and Topic: I reviewed the article “Motivating Students: 25 Success Ideas to Implement in the Classroom.” This resource explores various strategies to motivate students in the classroom setting.

Main Points:
1. The article emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive and supportive classroom environment, where students feel valued, respected, and connected to their peers and teachers.
2. Intrinsic motivation is highlighted as a key factor in student engagement and achievement. The article suggests incorporating student interests and passions into the curriculum to enhance intrinsic motivation.
3. Building relationships with students and understanding their individual needs and strengths is crucial in motivating them. Personalized feedback, recognition, and encouragement are essential in fostering motivation.
4. Creating meaningful and relevant learning experiences helps students see the value and purpose of their education, leading to increased motivation.
5. The article also discusses the significance of setting clear expectations and goals, promoting a growth mindset, and providing opportunities for student autonomy and choice.

Intrinsic Motivation and Suggestions:
The article acknowledges the importance of intrinsic motivation in student success and suggests incorporating student interests and passions into the curriculum to foster this motivation. It also emphasizes the role of positive relationships and personalized feedback in motivating students. Based on these points, I would highly recommend this resource to schools as it provides practical ideas and strategies that align with our learnings in the course module. By implementing the suggestions from this resource, schools can create an environment that promotes intrinsic motivation and enhances student engagement and achievement.
