We are all looking forward to being able to travel again sometime soon, so this week we will do some research and write a quick travel article for an ancient architectural destination in the Americas.
Having perused a wide range of civilizations and sites this week, the goal is to select one site that really interests you, research the architecture, and write a brief travel article, in the style you would find here: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20211004-yemens-ancient-soaring-skyscraper-cities (Links to an external site.)or here: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20211101-varanasi-where-its-forbidden-to-serve-meat (Links to an external site.)
Your post does not have to be as detailed as the references above, but you are aiming to communicate what makes this architecture unique yet familiar. Aim for about 10 – 12 sentences, see below.
For this discussion, provide the following information:
- Name of architectural/archeological site
- Civilization, Period and date (must be an architecture before Spanish Conquest – ie, before 1500 CE)
- Location – historical name and modern name – city and country
- Why you should visit this architecture”
- What makes it unique?
- What other architecture does it remind you of?
- What should a visitor know to appreciate its significance?
- An image of the location
- An additional academic resource link that gives us more info about the site
As always, post your response to the discussion then post a substantive comment or question to another post. If you find someone who has chosen the same destination, share some information you have discovered that might inform their travel plans.
As often happens, travel plans can go awry. Here’s a story (Links to an external site.) about a Japanese tourist trying to get to Machu Picchu during the pandemic. If you lovebad travel stories (Links to an external site.) , here are a few for fun!
