Writing Assignment, LBAR 489C Political Geography,

1. Read the articles about the Political Geography of the South China Sea posted on Moodle under the section “Writing Assignment”. Write a review of these articles. The review is not a criticism of the authors’ viewpoints, nor a criticism of any political entity. The review is to examine the political geography that is brought up in these two articles and why various countries have vastly different political viewpoints on the many territorial claims to the South China Sea, and how these claims may impact geopolitics, economics, etc.

2. Write a review of the article with at least 1,000 words. Most people write somewhere around 265 words per page, and this is especially little considering this is a 400 level course.

READ AND FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS IN THE WRITING ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS BELOW

.  Your writing assignment is to review the articles by discussing the authors’ main points, what they see as the main issues to the various claims of different countries to the South China Sea, and the Political Geography impact from this ongoing dispute. A simple summary of each article would earn a “D” by showing a lack of critical thinking. Try to be thoughtful and creative in your review. The review is NOT a simple criticism of the authors’ viewpoints, projects, or supposed political ideals. That is NOT what “Critical Review” means. You do not have the proper training or educational credentials to do those things. A “Critical Review” examines the geographic viewpoint of the principles of Tactical Urbanism in a thoughtful way, using critical thinking skills to show that you are incorporating learning from the lectures as you read about Tactical Urbanism. A review that incorporates critical thinking to show you are incorporating learning from the lectures into the article will likely earn a “C,” while a review that also shows organization that is original by you that incorporates learning from the lectures as well as organizing by the main issues will likely earn a “B.” A grade of an “A” will show critical thinking, all of the above, and maybe even a small bit of research by other expert analysts on the South China Sea.  A simple summary of the article will likely earn a “D” by showing a lack of critical thinking.
