Introduction: In this assignment, students are tasked with identifying and sharing examples of collaboration in the healthcare community. The purpose is to demonstrate how organizations work together to solve difficult problems in the healthcare field. Students will form groups of three and select an article or project that highlights collaboration in healthcare. They will then present their findings to the class. The following questions will be answered during the presentation.

1. What is the problem that the collaborative project is trying to solve?
The collaborative project aims to address a specific problem or challenge in the healthcare sector. The group must identify and clearly articulate this problem, which may range from improving patient outcomes to streamlining healthcare processes or addressing a public health concern.

2. What is the collaboration? Describe the project or program.
The collaboration refers to the joint effort between two or more organizations to tackle the identified problem. Students should provide a detailed description of the project or program, highlighting the specific activities, initiatives, or interventions that have been implemented to address the problem.

3. How is it an example of collaboration (versus cooperation or co-creation)?
To differentiate collaboration from cooperation or co-creation, students should emphasize the collaborative elements of the project. Collaboration entails active involvement and participation from multiple organizations, pooling resources, sharing expertise, and jointly making decisions. It goes beyond mere cooperation or co-creation, as it requires collective problem-solving and the integration of diverse perspectives.

4. What is the shared common goal for both organizations?
Identifying the shared common goal is crucial in understanding the alignment and purpose of the collaboration. Students should highlight the overarching objective or outcome that both organizations aim to achieve through their joint efforts. This goal may encompass improved healthcare delivery, enhanced patient experience, or advancing research and innovation.

5. Who were the stakeholders in the collaborations and what strengths did each bring to the project?
Stakeholders are individuals or groups directly or indirectly involved in the collaboration. In this question, students should identify the key stakeholders and highlight the unique strengths, expertise, resources, or perspectives they contribute to the project. Examples of stakeholders may include healthcare professionals, administrators, researchers, patients, community organizations, or government bodies.

6. Were the right stakeholders involved in this collaboration? Were any missing?
Evaluating the composition of stakeholders is essential to assess the effectiveness and inclusivity of the collaboration. Students should analyze whether the right stakeholders were engaged in the project and if any essential groups or perspectives were missing. They should consider the potential impact of these missing stakeholders on the project’s outcomes and overall success.

7. Reflect on the impact of this collaboration on today’s Canadian healthcare system – what was the effect of the collaboration? Think about performance management here – did it add/improve quality, effectiveness, efficiency, productivity, or add value to the healthcare system? If the article/initiative was conducted in another country – how could it be applied to the Canadian healthcare system?
Lastly, students should analyze the impact of the collaboration on the Canadian healthcare system. They should reflect on how the collaboration has influenced various aspects of the system, such as quality improvement, patient outcomes, healthcare delivery, efficiency, and productivity. If the article or initiative discussed is from another country, students should consider how the collaboration’s principles or lessons could be applied to the Canadian healthcare system and potentially enhance its functioning.

By answering these questions, students can critically analyze and present examples of successful collaboration within the healthcare community, highlighting the importance of working together to solve complex challenges in the field.
